Project Strategy
BeyondCarbon works with commercial developers to integrate sustainability principles through the entire development process. Working with the client and design team, Beyond Carbon ensures that sustainability decisions are made that enhance the end value of the development. We help produce buildings that are genuinely sustainable, within the commercial realities presented by business and market demands.More specifically, we undertake an analysis of:
-
Marketing forces. One of the key drivers for sustainability is the added competitive advantage of a building. Whilst doing the right thing for the environment is laudable, we understand that it also needs to make commercial sense. Thus we work with you to develop a comprehensive marketing approach to maximise the benefits of sustainable and environmental decisions.
-
Political and Regulatory issues. The current political and regulatory climate is constantly changing. Staying ahead of the game not only provides a competitive advantage but also saves expensive retroactive measures.
-
Materials. Worldwide, buildings consume 40% of global materials. There are several key factors to consider when sourcing and procuring materials including embedded carbon, VOC limits, responsible sourcing, recyclability and waste disposal.
-
Transport. Transport to and from a building not only contributes to CO2 emissions but also greatly impacts occupant welfare. Site selection, green travel plans, provision of cycle racks and showers contribute substantial benefit to a building.
-
Water. Water is quickly emerging as one of the world's most critical environmental concerns. By 2050 it is predicted that 54 countries could face water scarcity, including parts of the UK. Given the vulnerability of freshwater supplies, we envisage a dramatic increase in costs. Thus it is critical to implement water efficient technology, greywater and rainwater systems.
-
Energy. Buildings worldwide account for 40% of energy use. Energy prices are predicted to dramatically increase over the next few years. Renewable energy and increased efficiencies can significantly decrease the climate change impact of a building, whilst saving an occupier substantial sums of money.
- Biodiversity. Commercial buildings can positively contribute to biodiversity through properly designed green roofs and landscape design.
